You ever wonder how the makers of Unreal made their doors and elevators work on switches to move them with out a trigger? Well I figured out how and will try to make it as easy as possible. This Tutorial deals with moving doors and elevators with other movers.
Tutorial:
Okay first thing is to make a room any size you
want. Go ahead and add your playstart, and lights into the room.
Next make a block that goes across the width and height of your
room, make the breadth of the block not as large as your original
room. Next make another block that goes all the way through the one
you just made, it should be the same breadth of your block, make the
height and with what you want. Then place the block inside of the
other block make sure that the block is lined up with the wall on
both sides of the wall before you subtract it. There now should be a
hole going through the block and you should see the other side of
the original room. Now make a block that fits inside the hole, the
height and width should be the same as the hole. The breadth should
be less then the hole unless you want a thick door then just leave
the breadth the same. Once you have your brush for the door built
move it outside of your original room up into the air. Now subtract
your brush. Once you have it subtracted make another brush and
surround the door. When you have it so that nothing sticks outside
of the brush press the intersect button. I’ve always had trouble
with this step. After it is intersected, select copy and copy
polygons to brush. Now move your brush back to where your hole is.
Once you have it positioned in the hole where the brush touches both
sides of the wall and is moved where you like it press add mover.
Now after you have added mover, move your brush into the wall right
beside your mover and subtract it. There should be a hole going into
the wall for your mover to move into. Now select your mover and set
mover keyframe to 1. Now move the mover into the hole that you made
for it. Once you have it inside of the hole in the wall select your
mover again and this time set your move keyframe back to 0. Now that
the door moves into the hole select your mover again this time go to
mover properties. Under events leave event none and change tag to
door 1. Now go to object and set that from BumpOpenTimed to
TriggerOpenedTimed. Now make a new brush 16,16,16,16 usually works
for a switch. Take your brush back up outside of your room and
subtract it. Build a brush around it and intersect it. Then copy
polygons to brush again.
Now move your brush down right
beside the door, make sure that the brush is touching the wall and
is low enough for you to run into. Now press the add mover button.
Now take your brush and go back into the wall right behind your
mover and subtract it. You now should have a hole in the wall. Okay
select your mover and set it’s keyframe to 1. Now move your mover
back into the hole that you made for it. Once it is in the hole in
the wall select your mover and set it’s keyframe back to 0. Now
select your mover and go to mover properties. Go to event now change
event to door1 and leave its tag alone. There should now be a red
line going from your switch to the door. Now your ready to try it
out. Hit F8 and rebuild the level. Go in and try the door out if you
want to add sounds to it you can.
Elevators are exactly the
same. Just build your brush big enough for the play to walk onto and
place it on the floor and add mover. Set it’s keyframe, go to event
and change tag to lift 1., go to object and set it to trigger opened
timed. One more thing you should set the mover move time to 8 or
your elevator will be too fast. Now build another switch the same as
before. Place it on the wall low enough to run into, and place a
hole in the wall for it to go into. Set it’s keyframe, go to event
and set event to lift 1. There should be a red line going from the
switch to the lift. Now just rebuild the level and try it out.
